Low River, Summer Afternoon by Amanda Western

Features

ARTIST NOTES: Printed in burnt umber ink on delicately textured handmade Japanese paper, this linocut embraces the quiet strength of monochrome. The warm, earthy pigment softens the contrast usually found in black-and-white printing, lending the image a sense of age and natural patina- as though it has absorbed the tones of riverbank soil and sun-baked timber. The paper’s subtle fibres catch the ink unevenly, enhancing the work’s tactile surface and responding to the organic irregularities of the landscape it depicts. Each impression carries both fragility and permanence- a meeting of hand, material and mark.
